Unfortunately we were unable to travel from Sydney to Lakes Entrance as the area was being evacuated – so we booked an Airbnb in Canberra at the last minute. We arrived to a smokey horrible atmosphere and had to wear face masks. Undeterred by the smoke we were determined to visit the National Art Gallery and Portrait Gallery only to find them both closed due to the poor air quality. However we discovered the fantastic sculpture garden in the grounds of the galleries, although we couldn’t even see across the lake. We then found the War Memorial Museum was open and were completely moved by the incredible stories, photos and artefacts curated around all the wars Australians have taken part in. Weird weather continued with 42 degrees one day and 16 the next!
