The Etosha National Park translates as the Great White Place – as it has the largest salt pan in Africa of over 5000sq km and can be seen from space. Fortunately Hertz had upgraded our car from a Yaris to a RAV4 – otherwise we would have either been shaken to death on the dry rutted, gravelled roads or just got ourselves stuck down a hole! It is the dry season so it was easy to spot the very rare white rhinos and to sit mesmerised by the watering holes as kudu, springbok, eland, zebra and oryx wandered down for a drink or to fight! Also loved the iridescent starlings and cheeky tree squirrels!
